Acoustic Machine $12.78 The last two Vandermark 5 outings, Simpatico and Burn the Incline, were without a doubt sounds from a band coming into their own as a collective. Compositionally they seemed at the wall — at the margin, or limit — of where they could go as a band at that point. In other words, those two records were as good as they could possibly have been. With Acoustic Machine, the story is different altogether. Vandermark has become a composer, not only of compelling new jazz, but also for the Vandermark 5 as a unit. His writing and arranging for Jeb Bishop, Tim Mulvenna, Kent Kessler, and Dave Rempis is player-specific, tailoring certain sections, modes, and intervals to the strengths of particular players, thereby maximizing their contributions to the unit. Because of this development in Vandermark’s already considerable skill as a composer, the Vandermark 5 are a much stronger band. Consequently, Acoustic Machine is a significant step forward for an already fine band. Each of the compositions here is dedicated to a particularly influential artist in Vandermark’s own developmental iconography; the “HBF Series” — the first short pieces ever released by the group, which are interspersed throughout the disc — pays homage to visionary minimalist composer Morton Feldman. Each part in the series is a small work destined to extract the maximum viscera from space and silence while examining the relationships of instruments in tandem with one another timbrally. Other works are dedicated to Archie Shepp, Elvin Jones, Julius Hemphill, Stan Getz, and Lester Young. “Fall to Grace,” dedicated to Jones, is a sprightly, loose-swinging post-bop blues number. Kessler’s bass seems to stride the track, allowing Rempis’ tenor solo before Vandermark and Bishop clamp in for a long, loping melodic line that ends in Kessler’s solo. Vamping out straight from the changes, he jumps two and three intervals at a time until he does a turnaround to climb from the rim of the tune’s architecture back inside it. When the band re-enters, it’s only long enough for Vandermark, Remphis, and Bishop to trade twos and fours on bass clarinet, tenor, and trombone, respectively. “License Complete,” dedicated to Hemphill, builds on the inspirations rooted in R&B and takes the modal way into the blues from there. The gorgeous three-part lyrics are interspersed with brief solo statements. Bishop’s solo — in its languid, gut-bucket way — sums up the sentiment of the tune, while Vandermark’s kicks the R&B sensibility toward the funk model with vamps and legato runs entwined. And while the entire album is noteworthy, track for track, it’s the Feldman pieces and “Stranger Blues,” for Lester Young, that sum up what the V5 are all about at this period in time. You’re a Woman, I’m a Machine $11.18 Death From Above 1979 makes their considerable racket with only bass, drums, and the occasional Moog squelch assist. This isn’t a gimmick — between Sebastien Grainger’s frantic wail and the overdriven bass riffs of Jesse F. Keeler, the duo’s You’re a Woman, I’m a Machine pulses with a steady, sweaty energy that’s punctuated with arena-sized hooks. “Blood on Our Hands” boils dance-punk nearly all the way down, leaving only a relentless hi-hat cymbal, while “Turn It Out” and “Cold War” churn on double-time rhythms and rudimentary, yet completely effective bass runs. The duo’s setup certainly limits their range, which means the album can occasionally resemble one long song. But at just over a half-hour, it’s over before any questions about the lack of guitars can even start to form. There are hyper indie rock flare-ups, like in the Hot Snakes/Rocket from the Crypt yelp of “Going Steady.” And “Sexy Results” is a flirtatious and amplified cross of new wave and Rapture-style strut that comes complete with a cowbell upbeat. Preoccupation with the opposite sex provides some of You’re a Woman, I’m a Machine’s strongest moments, from Grainger’s “I don’t need you/I want you” clarification on “Romantic Rights” to the frenetic late-album standout “Pull Out.” Other highlights include the title track’s layered vocals and wiry punk revivalism, and the subtler “Black History Month,” which is a nice break from the record’s consistently jerking pace. Extraordinary Machine [DualDisc] $15.18 Like Wilco’s Yankee Hotel Foxtrot before it, Fiona Apple’s third album, Extraordinary Machine, turned into an Internet legend as fans leaked the unreleased record as labels left it on the shelves. Since Wilco’s album notoriously remained unreleased because their label deemed it uncommercial, Apple fans who were patiently waiting a long, long time for new material were convinced that her label, Epic, was withholding a masterpiece because they also thought it was uncommercial. And, based on the version of Extraordinary Machine that was widely leaked on the internets in early 2005, if Epic indeed harbored suspicions that the album was uncommercial, they were not wrong — although Apple reunited with her When the Pawn producer, Jon Brion, for Extraordinary Machine, the original sessions for the album found the singer/songwriter and producer both indulging in their worst tendencies, creating deliberately difficult, obtuse, baroque art-pop with so many creaky details and elliptical melodies that it barely let listeners into their world. It was the kind of record that devoted fans — say, the kind that will start a website called FreeFiona.com to petition a record label to release an album — would dissect endlessly, but it was too insular to appeal to even those who passionately loved her second album, which was already dismissed in some quarters as too arty. But the leaked album and FreeFiona did result in considerable media attention for the reclusive singer/songwriter, and put both Epic and Fiona Apple in the position to revive the project, since it proved that there was an audience for the album, giving Fiona artistic confidence and Epic the hope of recouping the 800,000 dollars they’d already sunk into the album. So, Apple ditched most of the Brion productions — according to the flurry of articles to promote its fall release, this was her decision, not the label’s, since she was unhappy with the recordings, which is why the album remained unfinished and unreleased for years — teamed up with producer Mike Elizondo, best known for his productions with Eminem and 50 Cent but also a sideman on records by Sheryl Crow, Gwen Stefani, and Avril Lavigne, and finally finished the record.To say that the released version of Extraordinary Machine is a marked improvement over the bootlegged version is not to say that it sounds more complete — after all, the Brion productions sounded finished, as evidenced by the two cuts that were retained; the intricate chamber pop of the opening title track and the closing “Waltz (Better Than Fine)” are the only time Brion’s productions not only suited but enhanced Fiona’s songs — but to say that they’re not only more accessible, but more fully realized, letting Apple’s songs breathe in a way they didn’t on the original sessions. Jet Black Leather Machine $15.98 Vince Taylor is a legend of early British rock & roll. He wrote and recorded one of the few pre-Beatles U.K. rock songs that can be hailed as a legitimate classic (“Brand New Cadillac”), and also led a madly colorful life that saw him eventually gain stature as one of rock’s earliest demented burnouts. For all his legend, however, there’s never been a compilation that effectively gathered the best of his recorded output onto one disc — until this one. Jet Black Leather Machine, finally, manages to cross-license the best and hardest-rocking of both his late-’50s British recordings and the early- to mid-’60s tracks he cut in France, all but one of these 21 tracks originating from 1958-1965. Does it live up to the legend of this manically energetic singer who tried to come off as a cross between Elvis Presley and Gene Vincent, as well as TO claim not quite genuine American origins (he did live there for a few years in the 1950s, but was born and raised in Britain)?Yes and no, though any disappointment is negated by the surprising force and sheer enjoyability of most of this set. In all honesty, Taylor wasn’t that great a singer, and though he did write “Jet Black Machine,” most of his recorded repertoire was limited to American rock & roll covers that the original artists did better. Yet his lack of innate talent was compensated for by both an idiosyncratic, over the top enthusiasm — a faint precursor, perhaps, to the many punk and post-punk singers who similarly didn’t let a shortage of standard vocal chops stand in their way — and some genuinely ripping backup musicians, even when he’s accompanied by British ones in the late ’50s. The menacing “Brand New Cadillac” alone would solidify his place in history, but he did manage a few other good sides that weren’t American rock covers, most notably “Jet Black Machine.” And even those covers of American rockers — which do comprise well over half of this set — usually pummeled along pretty hard, whether it be his 1958 debut single “I Like Love” (a Sun Records cover with a young, pre-Hamburg Tony Sheridan on guitar) or his 1965 version of “My Baby Left Me,” which has some truly astonishing guitar leads that rank right up there with the most ferocious axework of the British Invasion. Inaccuracies of the Mind Machine $11.98 Pay no attention to the hopelessly pretentious title, which sounds like the name of a Rush B-side. Inaccuracies of the Mind Machine has much more in common with the meditative (even at high volumes) post-rock of Mogwai and Boards of Canada’s trippy bliss-outs. Although the 14-track album is divided into relatively concise chunks, with only the hypnotic closer, “Eyes Closed, Numbers Appear,” breaking the seven-minute mark, the album is so well structured that it sounds basically like one multi-part suite rather than a collection of unrelated short compositions. This is not to say that Inaccuracies of the Mind Machine is samey or unvaried, however. Conceived and performed by Bay Area electronica-pop master Tommy Guerrero with ex-Swell members Monte Vallier and DJ Gadget, plus guest drummers including John Herndon from Tortoise, the album blends trippy dub textures (complete with occasional shards of Augustus Pablo-like melodica), ’70s-style space rock, and heavy doses of Guerrero and Gadget’s IDM-style beats into a unique and appealing sound that ignores genre restrictions.
